Change

As my psoriatic arthropathy continues to advance, with pain worsening now that I’m off the oxycodone, it has become increasingly clear over the last couple of months that my years of longhand scribbling are pretty much over. I can barely hold a pen any longer except to sign my name on a credit card receipt or bank draft (and that has always been an impossible-to-duplicate scrawl anyway that bears no relationship to cursive or neat script).

Somehow I need to get another laptop (not a Mac) or a typewriter, though the latter could get too expensive what with ribbon cartridges. My only other option is to quit writing altogether and apply for a change in my disability status to permanent.

There is software I think that you can talk into and it converts it to text I don’t know if that would be helpful to you đŸ˜‰

There is a really low-tech but no-doubt functional option if an actual laptop proves to be too far out of reach. It’s call the Alphasmart, and it might be the bridge you need between stenopads and screens.

I bought the Model 3000 in 2005 for our Africa trip and it’s still running on the same set of batteries. Instead of my laptop I’ll still throw it in my backpack on bike rides or trips downtown/wherever on the chance wherever I’m going If I get a bug to drain some idea out of my head.

Back then new they ran $200, but now they can be had in good used condition for as low as $20 on eBay.

It is genuinely barebones wordprocessing, but it features a full-sized keyboard, is very lightweight and AA-battery-powered so it’s go-anywhere. And with a cable you can easily transfer any files from it to your other laptop for editing or emailing.

Give Alphasmart a googling and look into it.

Charlotte, VR software will not work for me as I need the tactile sensation of writing.

Will, I am most definitely looking into Alphasmart, that may be exactly what I’m looking for.

    Thanks to both of you.
